FCI AG 3 (Assistant Grade III): Posts, Eligibility and Exam

FCI AG 3 means Assistant Grade III, the largest group of Category III posts in the Food Corporation of India. Many people call it the FCI clerk recruitment, but the job is wider than desk work. There are five streams: General, Accounts, Technical, Depot and Hindi.

Each stream asks for a slightly different degree and leads to different daily work. This page helps you pick the right one before you fill the form. For the wider picture of every FCI post, see our FCI recruitment guide.

FCI AG 3 Streams at a Glance

Read this table first. It shows the five Assistant Grade III streams and the degree each one usually asks for in past notices.

StreamUsual degreeMain work area
AG III GeneralAny graduation, computer skillsOffice files, establishment and records
AG III AccountsCommerce degreeBills, payments and account books
AG III TechnicalB.Sc. agriculture or listed sciencesQuality checks of stored grain

AG III HindiGraduation with Hindi and English as the notice setsTranslation and official language work

The exact subject list for Technical and the language rules for Hindi change slightly between cycles. The FCI AG 3 notification spells them out post by post, so match your marksheet against it line by line.

What Each Assistant Grade III Post Does Day to Day

General

Works in district, regional and zonal offices. Handles noting on files, staff records, leave and establishment matters, and replies to letters. Much of this now runs on computers, including the HRMS used by employees.

Accounts

Checks bills, prepares payment records and keeps account books. Commerce graduates find this stream closest to what they studied.

Technical

Helps check the quality of grain received and stored, takes samples and keeps quality records. Postings are often close to depots and storage points.

Depot

Records stock coming in and going out of a depot, keeps registers and online entries, and supports loading and dispatch. Read our FCI godown guide to see what depot life looks like.

Hindi

Translates letters, circulars and reports between Hindi and English and supports official language work in the office.

FCI AG 3 Eligibility: Degree, Skills and Age

FCI AG 3 eligibility has three parts. You must meet all three on the dates the notice fixes.

  • Degree: Graduation for all streams. Accounts needs a commerce degree. Technical needs B.Sc. agriculture or one of the science subjects listed in the notice.
  • Computer skills: General and Depot posts have asked for computer proficiency in past notices. Read the exact wording, since some cycles define it more strictly.
  • Age: Usually up to 27 years, and up to 28 for AG III Hindi, counted on the cut off date. SC and ST get 5 extra years, OBC 3 and PwBD 10, with other rules for ex-servicemen and FCI employees.

If you are in the final year of your degree, check the notice for whether final year students may apply. The date by which you must hold the degree is printed there. Use the age checker on the main recruitment page to test your date of birth.

Zone Wise Vacancies and Where You May Be Posted

FCI category 3 recruitment is planned zone by zone. The notice lists vacancies for North, South, East, West and North-East zones, and splits them by stream and category. The notice tells you how zone choice works, and your posting is normally inside the zone you were selected for.

Choosing a zone is a real decision. A zone with more posts may also draw more candidates. A zone near home may suit you even with fewer posts. Postings can be in a district office, a regional office or a depot, and depot work can mean smaller towns. Our FCI offices page explains how zones, regions and districts fit together.

How the Two Phase Online Exam Works

The FCI AG 3 recruitment exam in past cycles has had two online phases and no interview. In those cycles Phase I worked as a screening test, and candidates who cleared it were called to Phase II. The notice explains which papers each stream takes in Phase II. After Phase II, shortlisted candidates go for document verification.

Sections, number of questions, timing and how the two phases count towards the final list are set in each notice. We cover the topics in detail on the FCI syllabus page. Practise on a computer, since both phases are online and speed with the mouse and screen matters.
